Creating the Picture

The preliminary drawing from a photograph.

With the house and trees masked off on watercolor paper.

With the sky painted.

To paint the sky, I mix the paint, wet the paper with clear water and drop the paint onto the masking from an eyedropper while holding the paper at an angle. The excess paint will run to the edge of the paper where it is absorbed with a tissue. The drawing is kept at an angle until the paint is set

With the drawing transferred.

Previously, I transferred much of the drawing by cutting out elements of the original drawing and tracing them on the watercolor paper. Today, I place the original drawing on a light board and trace it onto the watercolor paper.

With the trees filled in.

With the house and adjacent buildings started. The scratch paper on the right is used to start the flow of paint from the pen.
